The therapeutic alliance is an alliance guided by empathy and the desire to understand. The more we understand and can think about concerns the more resources and resilience we have to deal with them.
Psychodynamic Psychotherapy with Lynne Stackhouse
Psychotherapy offers a therapeutic alliance and a unique space. In the work of psychodynamic psychotherapy we will think about the dynamic relationship between your present and your past. Talking about formative experiences and relationships can help in understanding the origins of your sense of self, and the origins of patterns of behaving or relating. We will pay attention to the ways that early defences continue to exist in a very powerful way, often below the radar, in the unconscious. Some of these defences may no longer serve you well and you may be able to identify them in repeated patterns. In the therapy we will work together to create a thinking space where it is safe to express those feelings that may have left you feeling desolate and overwhelmed.
I refer to ‘the work’ of therapy and indeed it is work. Sometimes it can be difficult, but it is shared work done in a safe, confidential space where our thinking is guided by empathy and a desire to understand. The more we understand and can think about issues the more resources and resilience we have.
Areas I work with:
I work with a range of issues including
- Anger, anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties or a harshly critical internal voice that leaves us with a sense of worthlessness or low self-esteem can make us feel unable to live our lives.
- Bereavement following the death of a loved one, the destabilising affect of loss at the end of a relationship or as a result of professional disappointments.
- We may feel isolated – cut off from others or cut off from our own feelings, or we may feel exhausted by the ‘extreme weather’ of our powerful emotions.
- Life transitions, identity, sexual orientation – you may feel stuck and unable to make decisions for yourself because you are not at ease with how you think about yourself or what you want your life to be.
