Anger management counselling is not about getting ‘rid’ of your anger but understanding it and what triggers your response, then helping you find a healthy way to express your feelings.
People often look for anger therapy or anger management counselling when they feel that they can’t manage their emotional outburst, whether that’s showing their emotions in aggressive verbal or physical behaviour or turning their anger inward and seething with annoyance. Some people come to counselling to stop feeling angry altogether.
Anger management counselling will include exploring your relationship with your anger, learning to take responsibility for it and may support you to express it in a safe and constructive manner.
Anger management: When do you need to seek help?
Sometimes we ‘know’ that there is a problem, when our angry outbursts happen:
- Too Frequently
- Too easily
- With too extreme a reaction
- With verbal or physical violence as a response
Many people seeking anger management counselling do so when they are facing some form of ‘life crisis’ that has triggered these sorts of responses, such as redundancy, a breakup or divorce, a bereavement, a violent incident or something traumatic such as a major accident or a life threatening / changing illness.
Knowing when to seek help could be from observing you own responses to things happening in your life or because those around you have changed how they respond to you or interact with you.
What is anger management counselling?
Anger management counselling does not attempt to ‘get rid’ of your anger, but helps you put that anger back to good use by showing you how to find a ‘proportionate’ response to your triggers.
Anger management counselling will include exploring your relationship with your anger, learning to take responsibility for it and may support you to express it in a safe and constructive manner.
Finding the right anger management counsellor
Research shows again and again that the effectiveness of the therapy or counselling is affected by the relationship you have with your therapist or counsellor. It is therefore important that you find someone who you feel comfortable with and whom you can build a trusting relationship.
